Education

Bachelors of Science: Biological Sciences, with a concentration in Biology and Society I graduated cum laude from the honors program at Arizona State University in 2012. I stretched myself beyond the required coursework, both enrolling in the honors program and completing internships in neurogenetics, neuroimmunology, cognitive psychology, and neurolaw laboratories, and I completed a masters-level honors thesis in cognitive psychology. In high school, I was dual-enrolled at Estrella Mountain Community college, and earned over 60 college credits as a high schooler.

Experience

Summary: My specialties are all levels of biology (through college), and any neuroscience/psychology. I bring an enthusiasm and love of learning to my students, and I utilize a model based on a growth mindset to empower them to teach themselves and become stronger learners. I also excel in tutoring history, literature, writing/composition, and high school mathmatics. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In 2012, I graduated with honors from Arizona State University with a B.S. in Biological Sciences, and I plan to apply for doctoral programs in neuroscience next year. I taught small-group study sessions for BIO 101 and 102 as an “SI study group leader" for three years at ASU. I have additionally worked as "Student Bridge Tutor" for a summer college composition class at ASU for at-risk students. I acted as a teaching assistant, writing lessons, grading assignments, leading students in group work, and working with students one-on-one during study hall. Finally, I acted as a teaching assistant for a college-level statistics class in the psychology department. More than any other experience, the three years as an SI leader helped me grow my leadership and tutoring skills, as well as my love of teaching. SI leaders use the challenges posed by high-risk/high-failure courses to guide undergraduates to discover, not just "what to learn," but also "how to learn." Knowing how to learn and how to obtain information is a skill demonstrated by multiple research studies to predict success in advanced classwork as well as in post-academic careers. I prepared the session plans and created new study materials for my students, which I then used to guide students in the study groups. My goal for each session was to get students collaborating in a focused manner, learning how to teach themselves and teach others based on the resources at hand. As these study sessions were voluntary for students, I might work with 1 student or 20 students in a session - sometimes as many as 100 students would attend before exams! Helping students learn the skills they need to *teach themselves* is my primary goal as a tutor. I might only see a student for 1 or 2 hours each week, and I want to make sure they can apply skills they develop with me to the time they study alone. I also love finding uncovering unique ways to help students make their learning relatable and retainable. Understanding is always more permanent than memorizing! Since graduation, I've been working as a research assistant at a neurotechnology company. GRE Verbal Reasoning (170), Quantitative Reasoning (158), Analytical Writing (5.5) GRE Biology: 740 SAT Critical Reading (800), Mathematics (630), Writing (750) ACT Composite (32), Writing (34), Mathematics (30), Reading (34), Science (29) SAT World History: 750 SAT Literature: 780 Note: Through academic achievements in High School, I received a full-ride scholarship to Arizona State University.

Hobbies

I love to dance! Right now, my favorites are Argentine tango and Arizona two-step, but I've also loved east-coast swing, salsa, contra, and the waltz. I'm also a member of a world fusion dance troupe, and our specialties are Bollywood and flamenco-styled dances. In my free time, I also enjoy reading, hiking, traveling, practicing archery, watching anime, going to the theater, and sewing.
