After getting a bachelor's degree in commercial art, I decided that teaching was my true ambition, so I went back to school at the University of Oregon to become certified in teaching English. There, I gained a master's and a PhD. Over a span of a forty-year teaching career, I've taught English, speech, and theater to high schoolers, middle schoolers, and college students. My passion lies in teaching composition and writing. Writing is a very important part of my life. In my experience, strong writing skills are a great indicator of future success, regardless of what field of study a student enters into. Some people seem to be born writers, but many, many more are made to be great writers. I believe that good writing is a skill that students don't necessarily need to be born with but that everyone is able to learn through good mentoring and attention to detail and craft. I aim to impart an appreciation for the written and spoken word, as well as literature and grammar, while helping students utilize the tools and skills needed to create effective, powerful writing. In my free time, I like to write, read, watch films, garden, and shop for antiques.
