Experience
Teaching students how to teach themselves is my focus. Sometimes I might see a student for only an hour or two each week, and it is important that they can use the skills they have learned on their own to complete their studies independently. I enjoy finding innovative methods to help students retain and remember concepts. The key to learning is that understanding is much more permanent than memorizing. I recently completed a degree in biological sciences at Arizona State University. Next year, I will study neuroscience at the doctoral level. As an undergraduate student, I led study sessions for introductory biology courses, and was a small group study leader for three years. I have been a teaching assistant for biostatistics and college composition courses. I was also a private tutor, and helped students in the subjects of test prep, history, biology, and math. While all of these experiences were great, the three years as a study group leader enhanced my tutoring and leadership skills. I also discovered a love of teaching. In this role, I assessed student challenges and guided them to discover not only "what to learn," but "how to learn." The process of teaching oneself how to find and process information is a skill that many studies show can predict success in advanced coursework. It leads to success far beyond college.
