In my teaching career, I have had the pleasure of teaching 6,000 students for a total for 26,000 contact hours. In all of this, I have come to appreciate a holistic method of education. Having a successful academic career is more than test scores and rules, it involves stress management, creating a vision, and coaching. It is especially important that the student experiences caring, understanding, and encouragement so that they can move forward with confidence in their own abilities. In the course of many years, I have observed and developed a teaching philosophy which encourages student engagement, and motivates them to develop to their full potential. Under my guidance, my students learn relaxation strategies, mindfulness and meditation, and creative expression. Some students are not in need of or require such interventions, however, those that embrace these techniques benefit greatly, and will have a lifetime of success. Although not a therapist, as an educator I can see clearly how the internal affects external performance. These techniques provide my students with tools to overcome challenges. My tutoring practice grew gradually through word of mouth, especially via students of the "orchid type": incredibly gifted, creative, and sensitive, with learning differences or challenges. Orchid type students benefit from caring guidance and support. These special souls required innovative methods, so I have developed a teaching approach to fit their needs. I start by using a difficult topic which often causes much trepidation, like college application essays or the SAT, in order to teach my students coping skills and confidence, which will benefit them over their lifetime. I enjoy the challenge of working with sensitive children and their diversity of backgrounds. I have learned to connect with each of them quickly. I have worked as a self-employed education consultant for the last 13 years. In my free time, I enjoy creative writing, yoga, and hiking.
