I love teaching one-on-one. This allows me to address a student's need at the critical time, alleviating stress and discouragement. I especially love teaching and tutoring math. I love its simplicity and straight-forwardness. I love demystifying it for students who think it is too difficult for them. A student's fear can be overcome with perseverance and practice. I believe in students attempting to read the textbook, do their homework and have questions ready for me. I am then able to help them complete problems and homework. My style is to have students hold and use their pencil (or whiteboard marker) while I guide on the side. I do not do work for students. Once a student gets used to this and feels comfortable doing the writing (and making mistakes) in front of me, we have a lot of fun and a lot of learning takes place! In an ideal situation I would have a standing appointment with a student and have a copy of their textbook. This would enable me to reteach difficult concepts and check for comprehension at each chapter; ensuring success on the final exam. Most of what seems difficult in life ends up being the most rewarding endeavors. Math requires effort and practice- it is not a spectator sport! But doing something hard well is exhilarating. If I could afford to not work I would just study math. It is that much fun to do.
